What to wear
Comfortable clothes for a dance class, leggings and a top as an example. You will get warm when moving about so layers are a good idea. You do not need to have your stomach on show: but if you want to that is also fine. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable so that you can forget about what you are wearing and enjoy dancing.
Hip Scarves will be provided for you to borrow, but if you have one bring it along.
For footwear, socks or ballet slippers are preferred so you can feel the floor through your feet. If you do need to wear trainers or shoes for health/medical reasons though that is fine.
What to expect
Class format usually consists of a 2-part warm up, dance fitness drill, technique practice, choreography, props practice and sagat (finger cymbals), knowledge of history and culture and musical repertoire and cool down.
Topics will vary each week. Dance styles covered will include but not limited to Egyptian Raqs Sharqi and Baladi (Bellydance), saidi, khalighee, folkloric and Nubian. In the future there will be opportunities for group performances (optional.)
About
Natalie Borg is a JWAAD teacher - full diploma (Josephine Wise Academy of Arabic Dance) and has been bellydancing, teaching and running events as part of the UK dance community for almost two decades.
Originally based in London (with Scottish/Greek heritage) she first started learning dance with Krystina in Chiswick and was a member of her award-winning ‘Egyptianize Dance Company’ before gaining her JWAAD teaching diploma and starting her ‘FAB Bellydance classes’ in Hampton Hill. Her students from this time have gone on to become professional dancers in their own right and still maintain the friendships first forged during the class.
She was the founder of the much loved monthly themed Hafla ‘Arabesque Nights’ in Gunnersbury, London over six years with co-host Jennie Marshall before moving to Edinburgh and starting ‘The Rose Hafla’ in Portobello which has been running for 2 years. She has organised almost 100 Bellydance events with a view to creating fun and safe spaces for dancers to experiment and to bring the community together.
Natalie has performed and taught at many events over the years including (but not limited too); Arabesque Nights, The Rose Hafla, The Arab Quarterly, Fantasia Festival, Planet Egypt, Guest soloist at Ozgen’s ‘One Day in Istanbul’ show at Northern Ballet Leeds, Yasmina’s ‘Spirit of Egypt’ show at JOY Festival. Sara Farouk’s Show at Music Box Theatre, at libraries as part of ‘Black History Month,’ projected onto Edinburgh castle as part of the first ‘Castle of Light’ directed by Sahara Studio, charity events, Bellydance Spa Weekend in Torquay, London show with the Baladi Blues Band, Bellydance Trophies Competition (Finalist) etc.
I look forward to sharing my experience and to continue to grow and practice as a dancer with you in class as I continue on my dance journey...
